Critique

Today we hung our first show for seminar. I thought overall the show looked allright. It's hung up in a good way at least. i don't know if its because we're all making such different looking and themed work, but it was difficult to give any unity to the show. I thought all of the pieces had individually strong areas. Many of the pieces seemed unfinished and I felt that this was a determining factor in the pieces and shows success. The critique was made up of speculation on content, I didn't think this was neccessarilly helpful, in fact it seemed to sway the meaning of pieces. What i mean by this is that the artist had pre-determined context, but changed the meaning to suit the free flowing opinions. While it's important to find out if your painting is saying what you want it too, it is equally important to say what you mean and mean what you say.
